Potato Insect Control

Potato Insect Control

Insect pests such as Colorado potato beetles, aphids, potato psyllids, and wireworms can cause significant damage to potatoes. Information on identifying and managing these pests can be found here.

Monitoring psyllid populations is an important component of managing Zebra chip.  Growers and consultants can deploy yellow sticky cards to help estimate if and when adult psyllids may be migrating into potato fields.  Guidelines for placing cards and some sources for purchasing cards are provided here.

The first documented cases of Zebra Chip in Idaho occurred in 2011. The disease occurred again in 2012. The attached presentation reviews the experince of 2012 and provides guidelines for managing the potato psyllid (and Zebra Chip) for this coming year. This information was compiled with the assistance of Dr. Erik Wenninger and Dr. Nora Olsen of the University of Idaho.
